With the first rectangular planting area and three triangles completed there's only one more raised bed to construct. Whilst the building team got on with sawing and drilling the gardeners planted more seedlings and onions.

The three triangle beds have now been completed. Two have been lined and then filled with a base layer of old leaves, cuttings and cardboard, followed by a mix of 1 part gravel to 8 parts top soil. The top 6 inches is a mix of compost and top soil. Meanwhile, other volunteers dug up two rectangles of turf where the final two beds will be situated. A few seedlings and potatoes have been planted but we're waiting for the warmer weather this weekend before we do more.
2 May 2026:
The timber, soil and gravel was delivered this week so construction of the raised beds finally began. After digging shallow trenches in the rock hard soil and moving 1.5 tonnes of timber across the field the designers got to work with drills, saws and malletts to put the triangles together. One triangle bed done - a few more to go! Thanks to everyone who helped out - particularly the construction team for their ingenuity, energy and perseverance.
18 April 2026:
Following discussions with Enable and other users of the fields we decided to build the raised beds on a grass area at the edge of the fields rather than on disused asphalt as orginally planned. Constructing raised beds on grass should be an easier task and will enable natural drainage. Here's a mock up of the design and location. We can't wait to get started.
28 March 2026:
Thanks to our team of innovative engineers and builders for constructing a rainwater harvesting system for the roof of our Portakabin. Now all we need is some rain!
7 March 2026:
After clearing more weeds and securing the fence we were excited to plant our first raspberry plants, kindly donated by Tooting Community Garden.
28 Feb 2026:
Ten volunteers began the job of clearing weeds from the asphalt, making room for our tools and discussing plans for water capture from the Portakabin roof.
14 February 2026:
We had a rare moment of sunshine on Valentine's Day when our garden volunteers met at Fishponds Fields to discuss the layout, dimensions, materials etc for our raised beds, think about what we want to plant, how to harvest water, and ideas for making the garden accessible to as many people as possible.
February 2026:
We are pleased to announce that Wandsworth Council have awarded us a grant of £4,275 to fund community gardening at Fishponds Fields. We can't wait to begin work on this unloved piece of asphalt - building raised beds and getting started on planting.
January 2026:
On September 27 Sept 2025 around 50 people gathered at Fishponds Fields to discuss how to make Community Gardening at the fields a reality.
Since then we have applied to Wandsworth Council for a grant to buy the necessary materials to get started.
